With the Rottler P-69, we now have the capability to CNC port almost any head, aluminum or cast iron. Within the machine, is the ability to digitize a port and then duplicate it exactly, to the rest of the head. We have been learning the P-69 and writing programs for heads all summer. The process to delevelope a new program is quite involved. First we flow the stock head to obtain flow numbers, then we hand port a runner, and flow it until we have reached the full potential of the head. This can mean several times, back and forth from hand porting to flow bench, and cutting the valve seat. Now a mounting plate for the head has to be made so we can mount the head into the P-69. Now the intake, exhaust ports and chamber can be digitized by the machine. Once the digitizing process is completed,we can produce a 3-d image of the port, this will show us where there are any discrepencies ”bumps” in the wall. We have the ability to manipulate the planes of the program to smooth out any of these “bumps” and improve air flow. Once this process is done we are ready to cut a head. To develope a head program can take 10 – 20 hrs, depending on the head. It takes the machine about 3 to 6 hrs to cut a set heads. Once a program has been developed it can be stored into the machine for future use. To date we have a dozen or more programs written. Although it is a lengthly and expensive process to write a program and build a mounting plate, the cost will be absorbed by us. For most aluminum heads, the cost for CNC porting will be $700 – $800. Cast iron $800 – $9oo. Call for pricing on your head today!
